Castello di Segalari Castello di Segalari

High on a hilltop in Tuscany’s unspoiled Maremma region, the meticulously restored 14th century Castello di Segalari offers an authentic taste of Italy.

An aristocratic castle steeped in history, today Castello di Segalari’s ancient ramparts and stone walls conceal chic contemporary interiors, effortlessly combining original period features with modern luxury. A perfect setting for families and friends in search of a memorable holiday rental.

A different side of Tuscany

South of Florence and Siena, Maremma has managed to remain under the tourist radar. Its beautiful, untamed countryside is dotted with ancient hilltop villages framed by cypress and olive trees.

Even in the warmth of summer, the area is lush and green. Towards the coast, sweeping plains have been farmed since Etruscan times, while Maremma’s beaches are some of Tuscany’s most untouched, remaining relatively uncrowded even in high season. Castello di Segalari’s semi-private beach and newly refurbished beach hut can be enjoyed just ten minutes’ drive from the castle.

Perfectly located

Castello di Segalari is well positioned for those in search of seclusion, while remaining within easy reach of the region’s many attractions. Pisa (the closest international airport) lies just 40 minutes away, while Florence and Siena are around an hour and a half by car.

Closer to the castle, traditional Tuscan towns and villages are spread across the landscape of ancient olive groves and rolling vineyards. Within an hour’s drive of the castle lie treasures such as Massa Marittima and its spectacular cathedral square; ancient Volterra is known for its artisanal heritage and alabaster carvings, while San Gigmignano is home to 14 medieval towers.

Food and wine

The cuisine here celebrates seasonal ingredients and the region’s diverse landscapes. From the forests come rich game dishes, while the coast is a bounty for seafood. Chance upon a village restaurant and you’ll experience the taste of Maremma, such as the family-run La Pineta, with its warm welcome and dishes including spaghetti alle vongole veraci.

Maremma is also a renowned wine-making region, its sought-after ‘Super Tuscans’ offering velvety, full-bodied red wines. Only ten minutes from Castello di Segalari, the epicentre of the region's wine making, Bolgheri is home to iconic, collector favourites such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Masseto.
